Oral Care Before and After Dentures
Deciding to get dentures can be a big life change. While you will face challenges speaking, eating, and proper denture fit, you will also face one unexpected challenge; cleaning. Cleaning natural teeth is very different from cleaning dentures.
Cleaning your dentures requires a few steps to make sure that they are not full of bacteria. Place your dentures in cool, clean water to start. Then use a soft-bristled toothbrush to remove any debris on your dentures. The next step is to place your dentures in a cleansing solution overnight.
It is important to keep in mind that many types of toothpaste are too abrasive for dentures, and that is why denture solution is needed. Also, hot water can warp dentures, so be sure to store them in cool water. Sleeping with dentures in your mouth is not recommended.
Adjusting to dentures can be difficult, but with the proper knowledge, it can be an easy adjustment. Talk to your dentist with additional questions about dentures.
